Why my boyfriend is always competing with me?

There's this thing in my school called "academic excelence" and it's for students that are very noticible in the academics and in social work... I wanted to nominate my self because they only choose 3 students every year and they give them $5.000!! I really need that money so I wanted to try out but my boyfriend said that he was going to try out too... So he wants to compete with me!... I know that I'm better than him in that academics but he is the senior cl president,high school basketball coach (well not coach LOL is that I forgot the name)) and he is the president of a church... In other words he is very good and since I know that he deserves it I told him that if he wanted to nominate himselve that I was going to forget about me and support him... but he said... Yeah you should so that because it would be a shame to know that your boyfriend won to you. I almost cried because it felt horrible! He haves the perfect life and his mom and dad ownes a factory so he haves money!! But why he competes with me? Is it normal I'm guys to do that?
